China goes it alone on the Net


Given all the flak that the Chinese government has taken in the last few months over its attitude to the Net, it comes as no surprise that it has announced plans to create a series of new domain names.

According to the People's Daily Online, the new domain names will be based on Chinese characters, meaning they will be easier to access for the millions of Chinese PC users.

As you'd expect, the new domain names are being issued without reference to ICANN, something that has caused some Net observers to speculate that China could be looking to create its own internal country Internet.

Ever the keeper of the peace, ICANN has declined to comment on China's plans, although it is said to discussing a number of issues with the Chinese government...
