Card issuing organisation Visa has issued an industry warning that a popular piece of software used to control debit card transactions made via EFTPOS cash tills can inadvertently store sensitive customer information, including customer PIN codes.
Two versions of the software, which is supplied by Fujitsu Transaction Solutions are being investigated. Retailers known to be using the software include OfficeMax and Staples, although the problem is mainly limited to US retail chains.
The Visa warning comes as several US banks, notably Bank of America, Washington Mutual and Citibank, have replaced several hundred thousand debit cards for their customers, following a spate of unauthorised transactions on customer accounts.
