MIT to distribute its courses free on a Hard Disk

It did not make waves in the blogosphere for some reasons. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is looking for African institutions/universities to house its free, web-based teaching material.

The OCW or Open Courseware programme offers more than 1400 world-class MIT courses covering 33 categories and which has had a great audience since its launch a few years ago.

In parallel, the MIT OCW is set to be distributed freely as a package known as MIT OCW in a box. A mirror of the MIT OCW website with videos, software, user documentation and other material will be copied to an external hard disk drive and distributed. It is unknown whether DVD duplicates will be available.

Such schemes can only advance the idea of open learning even in remote and internet-poor areas like Africa and Asia
