Chip-and-pin-and-CCTV

I was interested to read about an Abbey customer that left her card behind in a grocery store and later discovered an unauthorised 250 quid ATM withdrawal from her account, plus an unauthorised 45 quid purchase.

Normally, banks will reimburse punters for unauthorised transactions, but Abbey said no Yves Gentle's case, as it claims that the 36-year-old IT support worker's PIN was used for both transactions.

Although precise details of the case aren't available, my guess is that Ms Gentle was shoulder surfed in the grocery store - possibly using CCTV - which then allowed her account to be ripped.

Anyway, all's well that ends well, as, after being contacted by the This is Money financial column, Abbey has agreed to refund the dosh to Ms Gentle's account...
