I wonder how many people have downloaded the new Microsoft Private Folder Tool in the few days since its release?
Private Folder 1.0 is designed to allow users to create one secure folder which is then password protected. They can then stuff it full of *ahem* “private” files clear in the knowledge that it will be secured away from prying eyes.
This poses a number of questions. How secure is this folder? Does it mean that each user could have an oasis of pornography free from the prying eyes of corporate IT? How are users going to remember yet another password (I know Miss – they will use another yellow sticky!)
That’s not all. Users have to sign up to a “Windows Genuine Validation” of their PC before they can get the tool. Yep, let Microsoft snoop around your computer and they will reward you with a trinket to secure a folder.
