Openoffice.org less secure than Microsoft Office

ZDNet reports on the latest survey from an Open source friendly country, France.

The French Ministry of Defence worked for a year on a project that was mean to compare Openoffice.org and Microsoft Office from a security perspective. The report was made public at the beginning of July 2006 and clearly favours Microsoft Office.

Researchers at the ESAT Virology and Cryptology laboratory managed to produce different types of malware which were able to infect the Openoffice.org suite and produce a list of identifiable vulnerabilities.

More and more French public organisations are turning to Linux, Openoffice.org and open source in general due to budget constraints.

However, the researchers have made it clear that they will meet Openoffice.org developers to help improve security on the free office suite and it is unlikely that the report will be detrimental to Openoffice.org user base in the public sector.
