Hackers tucking into the open source cookbook

I was intrigued to hear that hackers are using their open source expertise - gleaned from their Linux and Apache experiences - to other programming platforms.

McAfee says that this is especially obvious when you look at the volume of bot software on the Net, where it is apparent that groups of hacker programmers are working together to perfect their malware.

Dave Marcus, security research and communications manager with McAfee's Avert Labs, says that, over the last year and a half, his team has noticed how bot development in particular has latched on to open source tools and the open source development model.

McAfee researchers have described this use of open source techniques in a new magazine published this week. Called Sage, the publication's inaugural issue features a cover story titled "Paying a price for the open source advantage."

McAfee plans to publish Sage every six months...
