The FBI is stepping into the fight against online fraud with a new initiative called Operation Identity Shield.
The low profile project, which is already in operation, is one of a growing number of collaborations between the FBI and the technology industry.
The Associated Press quotes Daniel Larkin, head of the FBI's Internet Complaint Centre as saying its evolution of what the FBI has been doing in the phishing arena.
The newswire also quotes Larkin as speaking at the Black Hat USA conference in Las Vegas this week and saying that the agency's anti-phishing effort, called Digital PhishNet, was launched in late 2004 with backing from Microsoft, America Online and VeriSign, as well as the Secret Service and the US Postal Inspection Service.
