Why some faulty hard drives work after being freezed

French Microsoft Developer Pascal Belaud had some serious problems with his hard disk drive back in June and he used the old freeze-o-drive solution to get his 25GB of backup back from his ailing hard drive.

Pascal then investigated why freezing hard drives to sub-zero temperatures actually works well on hard drives.

Microsoft France technical and security director, Bernard Ourghanlian, gave a very elaborate talk from an electronic and a mechanical point of view.

It appears that this ‘technique’ is used quite often by data recovery firms (which charge hundreds for performing the process).
