US Virgin Islands govt loses a half a million to hackers

Hackers have siphoned off around a half a million dollars from a couple of US Virgin Islands' government bank accounts with Banco Popular, government officials admitted late last week.

According to officials, the hackers exploited a number of weaknesses in the security of the Puerto Rican bank to make a series of small withdrawals, staged over two months, until government officials spotted the problem.

The bank has re-credited around $300,000 of the missing dosh immediately, and plans to re-credit the rest this week.

Neither the bank, nor the government officials concerned, have said how the system hack was carried out, although they do say that they have a suspect in the case...
