I was quite surprised to see that a hacker group shut down three major Internet video gaming sites earlier this week, posing as the FBI.
According to newswire reports, the sites were defaced with the FBI seal and an anti-piracy warning, which said:
"The unauthorised reproduction or distribution of copyrighted work is illegal. Criminal copyright infringement, including infringement without monetary gain, is investigated by the FBI and is punishable by up to 5 years in federal prison a fine of $250,000."
ABC News quotes the FBI as saying that the hackers did a thorough job and made the `shutdowns' look very official, even though the FBI was not responsible.
Hacking is one thing, but passing yourself off as the FBI is serious stuff, and renders the hackers liable for heavy duty prosecution under federal law.
My Gawd, if the FBI catches up these hackers, they're gonna be for the high jump, I can tell you.
Talk about a bloody stupid thing to do...
