A Hub is a convergence point for the data on the network, where data is received from one or more directions and directed to another points on the network.

On a network, a group of modem cards may act as an Hub for dial-in users, and a gateway card can be a Hub for connections to a LAN. A Hub often is accompanied by a Switch that switches data and determines how and where the data should be directed to. Hubs are very much required for a network with a number of clients and also internet service providers usually place Hubs in various locations and are connected to a main server.
