3M unveils first totally clear plastic card

Now here's an interesting thing. 3M has taken the wraps off the world's first totally clear credit/debit card plastic card which has mag stripe functionality, but is totally see-through.

The card technology builds on the success that 3M has had recently with its Vikuiti projection film, which allows digital projectors to work on transparent plastic glued to windows.

You may have seen the 3M technology at Lloyds-TSB branches, where the back projection system is an alternative to LCD and plasma TV screens.

Visa is sufficiently impressed with the technology to make 3M a preferred supplier for its next generation of plastic cards.

The most interesting aspect of the 3M Vikuiti card is that, although it is almost transparent, the cards can be `seen' by the LED detectors in most modern ATMs.

Which makes the cards a great marketing tool. Plans call for the first Visa cards using the technology to be issued later this year...
