TorrentSpy shuts off access to the Yanks

The surprise news over the weekend was that TorrentSpy.com, one of the most popular BitTorrent sites, announced on Sunday it was shutting off access to US IP addresses.

The move comes after news that the Web site is facing a decision on a lawsuit from the MPAA (the Motion Picture Association of America), which filed a civil complaint against the site last year, accusing TorrentSpy of violating copyright law.

The judge in the case is said to be about to make a decision on whether the site should turn over its records on US citizens to the MPAA.

Of course, if the site blocks access to US IP addresses, it could also claim to have deleted its historical records, and - just IMHO - get away with it.

But, as they say, we'll leave that one for the judge to decide...
