Chinese hackers focus on `soft' government Web sites

As news that the Chinese military are allegedly responsible for a June hack on the Pentagon's computer systems seeps out, a report in China suggests that Chinese hackers are attacking government Web sites there, mainly because they're a soft target.

The China Daily newswire quotes Beijing Jiangmin New Sci & Tec Co., a Chinese antivirus firm, as saying that 25 government Web sites were attacked last month, whilst 40 sites in East China's Jiangxi Province were subjected to a hacker attack in the first eight months of the year.

The newswire makes the interesting assertion that few government Web sites use advanced technology to protect themselves from hackers and viruses.
