Internet users in Western Europe are expected to spend around £35.6 bn for the period from October to December, according to a paper published by Forrester Research, called "Europe's 2007 Christmas: An Online Retail Wonderland".
That's an increase of 58 per cent increase on 2006 and at this rate, the £50bn barrier should be shattered by next Christmas.
UK accounts for nearly 40% of that amount with each online shopper pending on average £500 during that period, an increase of 40 per cent over last year.
Already 10 per cent of all retail sales are made online and this is bound to increase as users become more confident in making online transactions and high speed broadband becomes more widespread. There are 27 million internet users.
