China set to surpass US as Largest Internet Country

The China Internet Network Information Center which acts as the official mouthpiece for all Internet matters revealed that the total number of Chinese internet users rose to 210 million by the end of 2007, up from 137 million one year before.

That represents a 53 percent increase in 12 months and is made even more impressive by the fact that the second half of 2007 witnessed a surge in the number of internet users in China.

More than 25 million users joined the Chinese internet community during the first six months of 2007 but that number swelled to 48 million from July to December; that's about 200 new internet users every minute.

At this rate, a quarter of the Chinese population will be online by June 2008 and as Michael Arrington puts it, "The US is now slowly losing its dominance in Internet Technology."
