ATI has not had a high-end chip since the introduction of the R580 back in January 2006 - better known as the Radeon HD 1900XT and 1900XTX.
Back then ATI managed to keep pole position, until nVIDIA introduced the GeForce 7900 at CeBIT March 2006.
Since then things have been looking bleach in the ATI/AMD camp and NVIDIA has been trumpeting their superiority more or less ever since.
ATI has been fighting to keep up and the hope was that the R600 (Radeon HD 2900XT and XTX) was supposed to get them back in the race.
