Stand by for image-based mobile searching

I was intrigued to read that Vodafone Germany was busy showing off its latest new service - image searching - at the CeBIT computer faire when it opened yesterday.

The idea is that punters snap an image using their camphone and the network will tell them everything they need to know about the object.

Known as Otello, the service is fast and highly effective. It also has profound security implications, since it means that, if it works with faces, then you can snap someone and tell within seconds who they are

what their profile is.

Without them being aware of what you are doing.

Vodafone says it is trialling the news service in partnership with Bild, the German newspaper, which is asking readers to snap pictures and send them in for possible publication...
