Techreport : I am more interested in knowing when the e5x00 and the q8x00 series is coming. Also from what I have heard the q8x00 has 4MB of L2 cache which is half of q6600. I do not understand this. This means even though the newer quad core can accomodate more cache, it does not and would ultimately end up slower than the q6600. Strange strategy by Intel.

Videohelp : Most games aren't well multithreaded so the faster clock on the 8600 might be better. On the other hand multithreading is becoming more common so future games might benefit from more cores. Crysis on a dual-core 3Ghz, with an nvidia 8400, ran like crap. Upgraded to a 8800 GT on sale for $129.95, runs like a top with all the eye candy on. Video card is more critical for game performance than CPU speed.

Guru3D : Since no games at the moment support up to four cores, the E8600 would be the better performer considering you can easily OC it without a hitch to 4.0GHz (on stock volts). Sure it won't be as "future proof", but nothing really is anyway... The time mainstream games move to (4x+) multiple cores you would most likely have to upgrade from the Q9550.

Hexus.net : Intel are already changing to socket 1366, and upgrading to DDR3 will require a new motherboard; despite this it provides little advantage at the moment. Not going to notice much with quad core, but if you do buy a new CPU you'd be daft not to get a quad, as when games thread properly you'll get so much more benefit from them. ATI 4870 has to be best bang for buck/ future proofed at the moment, would get much more benefit from that than a new CPU.

What Other Reviewers are Saying:

Xbitlabs : Yes, Core 2 Duo E8600 works at 3.33GHz - 166MHz higher clock frequency than that of Core 2 Duo E8500, and it is the highest frequency in the entire Core 2 family. However, it is not the most interesting thing about it. It is much more important that together with the launch of the new processor Intel will introduce into mass market new E0 Wolfdale stepping.

Firingsquad : While it has nearly been two years since the first quad-core CPU arrived from Intel, we're still in a holding pattern waiting for more apps that are truly capable of taking advantage of all four cores: we've certainly seen games with independent threads for physics, networking, AI, etc, but none of them have really made a profound case for upgrading to quad core.

Legitreviews : Processors come in various revisions as the manufacturers test and modify the circuits that comprise the finished product. For most consumers the E8600 is just another speed bump in Intel's product line. For a small number of consumers the E8600 represents a means to hitting 4500+MHz consistently. For an even smaller portion of consumers, the E8600 makes the QX9650 and QX9770 obsolete for most benchmarking.

CDRinfo : Some time ago we had the chance to review the first batch of Intel's 45nm quad-core cpu processors code-named Yorkfield and today we will examine the latest and fastest Wolfdale C2D processor, the Intel C2D E8600. All the latest Wolfdale processors come with a 6MB L2 cache and feature support a 1333MHz FSB. Let's start with a quick comparison amongthe various C2D series of processors.
