Techreport : I am more interested in knowing when the e5x00 and the q8x00 series is coming. Also from what I have heard the q8x00 has 4MB of L2 cache which is half of q6600. I do not understand this. This means even though the newer quad core can accomodate more cache, it does not and would ultimately end up slower than the q6600. Strange strategy by Intel.

Videohelp : Most games aren't well multithreaded so the faster clock on the 8600 might be better. On the other hand multithreading is becoming more common so future games might benefit from more cores. Crysis on a dual-core 3Ghz, with an nvidia 8400, ran like crap. Upgraded to a 8800 GT on sale for $129.95, runs like a top with all the eye candy on. Video card is more critical for game performance than CPU speed. 

Guru3D : Since no games at the moment support up to four cores, the E8600 would be the better performer considering you can easily OC it without a hitch to 4.0GHz (on stock volts). Sure it won't be as "future proof", but nothing really is anyway... The time mainstream games move to (4x+) multiple cores you would most likely have to upgrade from the Q9550.

Hexus.net : Intel are already changing to socket 1366, and upgrading to DDR3 will require a new motherboard; despite this it provides little advantage at the moment. Not going to notice much with quad core, but if you do buy a new CPU you'd be daft not to get a quad, as when games thread properly you'll get so much more benefit from them. ATI 4870 has to be best bang for buck/ future proofed at the moment, would get much more benefit from that than a new CPU.
