China’s internet population, which is already the world’s largest, has further surged to a whopping 298 million, registering an impressive 41.9 percent rise as against the previous year, a recent study revealed.
According the study, tagged as “23rd Statistics Report on the Condition of China's Internet Development”, put forth by China Internet Network Information Centre, China’s wireless web is all set to experience dramatic growth trends with the arrival of 3G era.
At the end of the previous year, China’s internet population was almost similar to the whole population of the United States, the report unveiled.
The report further notified that internet usage in countryside rose notably, with the village internet population surged to 84.6 million users, thereby showing a massive 60.8 percent year-on-year rise, while the urban area grew at the rate of 35.6 percent, the report added.
Scaling new heights in web usage, internet penetration in China has reached 22.6 percent by the end of 2008, which clearly exceeds the global penetration average of 21.9 percent, the report claimed.
In addition, as many as 117.6 million web users in China accessed the web using their mobile handsets, showing an increase of 133 percent against the figures for the year 2007.

The number of web users in China now makes it the world's biggest and this is set to increase even further as web-enabled mobile handsets fall in price while coverage increases.
