HTC Set To Release Blackberry-like Smartphone Called Snap

Smartphone manufacturer has demoed a nifty looking smartphone called Snap, at CTIA 2009, that's aimed at those looking for a model with a proper keyboard but don't want to use either Blackberry or Symbian.

The phone looks like a blackberry phone with a pearl-like trackball (the jog ball) and a QWERTY keyboard but comes with Windows Mobile 6.1 instead of Blackberry OS or Symbian S60 on the Nokia E71.

It is apparently powered by a Qualcomm MSM 7225 CPU running at 528MHz which should give it enough oomph for Windows Mobile 6.5 and possibly version 7.0. Cnet, which had a preview of the device, said that it weighs under 120g and comes with HSDPA, WiFi and Bluetooth compatibility.

At 12mm thick, it is one of the thinnest Windows Mobile phone around but won't have a touchscreen as it is the case for a overwhelming number of HTC models. Snap will also come with a 2-megapixel camera, Assisted GPS and a microSDHC card reader.

HTC claims that the smartphone will be able to run for 8.5-hours before needing charging and users can expect the Snap to come in later this summer in the UK. Now, wouldn't it be great to get Android to run on this little gem.

Our Comments

According to Digitaltrends, Snap is going to be HTC's budget-priced Windows Mobile handset. Given that HTC mobile phones are very rarely available on anything under £35, we should hopefully find it on £25 monthly contracts. But then again, the wonderfully designed Nokia E71 can be purchased on a £20 per month contract with unlimited internet, Skype and texts.
