Should Chief Scientific Adviser At MI5 Be A Geek?

UK’s security intelligence agency, the Security Service otherwise known as MI5, is looking for a part time Chief Scientific Advisor to "lead and co-ordinate the scientific work" of the organisation.

This unique and challenging role will be given to someone with "World-class scientific expertise and credibility in relevant scientific and technology disciplines" as well as "Excellent strategic skills" and "A successful track record of managing critical projects and processes in a complex environment".

Although, the name of the role is CSA, chances are that the chosen candidate will need to be a confirmed geek as well, not just a lab rat or a pseudo-hacker. Certainly not a Nobel Prize winner but possibly someone with a can-do attitude and an ability to think outside the box.

As a strategist, the CSA will also be gazing into the future, see where technology will be in the next few years as well as talking with technology companies worldwide.

This could involve penetrating communication networks of potential enemies, establishing strategic partnerships with the likes of Skype, Bebo, Facebook and Google and working in close collaboration with telecommunications giants.

Recruitment specialist Egon Zehnder International has been given the task to find that rare bird.

The government's own CSA, Professor Beddington, told the BBC that "The chief science adviser has a role to frustrate terrorism to prevent espionage hurting the UK, protect our critical national infrastructure and to frustrate the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction."

As a side note, we've noticed that MI5 can't seem to decide whether to use advisor or adviser. Stick to the second one according to our in-house grammar adviser.
