The research only takes into account the power consumption of data centers and related infrastructure. What it fails to assess is the relative power savings that the internet brought in. For example, using Google maps saves fuel and sending emails rather than snail mail costs less and has a smaller CO2 footprint. Obviously, Sun Microsystems has a vested interest in the research paper since it sells power efficient hardware.
