Nintendo has managed to sell more than 766,000 DS and DSi portable gaming consoles in the US in June 2009 alone; which given the fact that we're in one big recession is a pleasant surprise by itself.
The NPD group which monitors the sales of games and gaming devices across the United states said that more than 424,000 Nintendo DSi, the newer model, and in excess of 342,000 Nintendo DS have been sold last month.
To make things even sweeter, the Wii, the company's flagship home console, was the top console for the 21 months running with around 362,000 sold.
Cammie Dunaway, executive vice president of Sales & Marketing at Nintendo (America) said that "More consumers continued to gravitate toward products that offer quality experiences and great value for the whole family".
The WiiFit managed to grab the fourth place in the most popular games in June, with more than 270,000 copies. Three other Nintendo games managed to sell nearly 700,000 copies in the last month alone.

This confirms the theory that hardware is nothing without software and that it still remains part of the equation. Microsoft and Sony with their Playstations and their Xboxes might have the upper hand when it comes to sheer firepower, but the Wii still won the day with a more holistic approach.
