Half-baked Amazon Kindle Comes To UK

So the Kindle is finally coming to the UK and the rest of the world on the 19th of October according to a statement issued this morning by Amazon, the world's largest online retailer.

The Wireless international version is essentially the newer Kindle with a 6-inch screen, 3G connectivity, 2GB internal storage which according to Amazon would be enough for 1,500 books. It still keeps the Text-to-Speech and Whispersync features.

Surprisingly, you won't be able to buy it from Amazon.co.uk but from the Amazon.com website instead where it costs $279, slightly more than the $259 for the US version. Adding VAT and shipping will likely bring the cost of the reader to around £220.

Kindle customers will also need to buy their ebooks directly from the US retailer as well which should cost less than if they were sold in the UK but will contain Americanized words and expressions.

More than 250,000 books are currently available to UK customers plus a slew of international newspapers. Aside from the UK, the Kindle will be available in more than 100 other countries which have 3G coverage.

Also the 110v US power supply on the new Kindle is not compatible with the UK power grid which means that buyers will need to get a converter or charge it over USB.

Amazon's CEO, Jeff Bezos, said that there will be a UK-Centric Kindle experience will be available in a near future which will enable customers to purchase Kindle and Kindle books in sterling from the Amazon.co.uk site.

Using one password for many services is an unfortunate result of the rising number of websites that requests that you sign up with them. To some extent, browsers that save your password automatically is a boon but even this can be a cause of trouble.
