STMicroelectronics Clasps Hands With ARM To Ramp Up Next-Generation Home Entertainment

Chip manufacturer STMicroelectronics has approved the use of the ARM’s Cortex-A9 MPCore multicore processor in its next generation digital television system-on-chip (SOC) integrated circuits as well as set top boxes.

However, ARM already offers its processor technology for a wide range of equipments manufactured by the STMicroelectronics, but the new agreement entails that the company’s next-generation equipment would be capable of processing with comparatively higher bandwidth broadband, and broadcast the shows streamed straight into the homes.

The deal would help STMicroelectronics to bolster up the viewing experience by delivering content in full HD, while keeping the power efficiency at higher scale in the home entertainment systems.

The integration of ARM’s newer processor technology lets STMicroelectronics to make the most out of the proficiency it gathered during the development of its hugely successful ST-40 processor, and further indicates the company’s aim to base its forthcoming HDTV SOCs on ARM technology.

Philippe Lambinet, executive VP for STMicroelectronics’ Home Entertainment and Display Group, said:“Building our next-generation HDTV consumer devices around the high-performance ARM architecture will enable us to continue to deliver best-in-class devices for our customers, while providing a simple migration route from our existing ST-40 based chips”.

ARM has further used this deal to demonstrate how its equipment are increasingly becoming popular due to the instrumental growth of its Cortex range of processors and mail GPUs for digital TV equipments and set top boxes.
