Cumbria Community Launches Own Public ISP

Cybermoor, a Cumbria-based internet service provider, is all set to provide high speed internet connections to Alston Moor, a community based close to the town of Alston.

The NHS-funded fiber based connection will be capable speeds of offering up to 100mbps; however initially users will only receive 20mbps.

Daniel Heery, Chief Executive of the company mentioned that the 100 mbps backhaul will be secured later when the prices fall as the connection between access part of the network and the core network tends to be costly.

Telewest’s network in Newcastle and Alton Moor will be connected by a backhaul link based on a microwave connection.

The chief executive also said that the total one-off cost of setting up link was around £100,000 whereas other ISPs claimed the cost to be in excess of £50,000 per year.

It is important to note that Cybermoor is UK’s first broadband cooperative entity and the connections have been made possible by Government funding and a lot of hard work.

Of late many local authorities in UK are actively looking to get high speed broadband connectivity in their areas and some like the Swindon borough council had even announced that their residents will get free internet access through out the town.
