Gaming BAFTA nominees revealed

The 2010 nominations for the British Academy Video Game Awards were finally unveiled today, revealing an extensive roll call of nominations for just a few select games. The killer titles hogging the nominations are Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Batman: Arkham Asylum and Assassin’s Creed II.

All these games have been nominated for the Action, Artistic Achievement, Best Game, Gameplay and Original Score awards. Not only that, but they’ve all received at least one nomination somewhere else too. In fact, Uncharted 2 has a chance of snagging a whopping nine BAFTAs, while Modern Warfare 2 could pick up eight. Meanwhile, Valve’s co-operative undead romp, Left 4 Dead 2, hasn’t done too shabbily with its four nominations.

Thankfully, there’s a bit more variety in some of the other categories. Nintendo’s 2D platform-hopping revamp, New Super Mario Bros Wii, is in with a chance of hooking the Gameplay award, as well as the Family and Social award. Other games in the latter category include The Beatles: Rock Band, Guitar Hero V and Wii Sports Resort. Meanwhile, PixelJunk Shooter has also been nominated for a Gameplay award.

There are also some interesting nominations for the Strategy award. These include Empire: Total War, Command and Conquer 3: Uprising and Plants vs Zombies. However, both Football Manager 2010 and FIFA Manager 10 made it to the list too, while Relic’s Dawn of War II was nowhere to be seen.

We’re also particularly glad to see that innovation and personality have been rewarded at least somewhere in the nominations. Tim Schafer’s stomping heavy metal fantasy, Brutal Legend, is up for the Story award, along with Broken Sword and Dragon Age: Origins. We were also delighted to see both Scribblenauts, Professor Layton and Pandora’s Box and LittleBigPlanet (PSP) potentially up for a big golden face in the Handheld award.

What, no Zelda: Spirit Tracks, you ask? Nope, but it still stands a chance of winning the GAME Award of 2009, which has been put to the public vote. You can cast your own vote here, where you have a choice of voting for all the expected titles, along with Street Fighter IV, GTA: China Town Wars and Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks.

Also notable is the BAFTA Ones to Watch award, which recognises up and coming indie talent that doesn’t have the big marketing bucks of EA. The nominees for this award are the third-person Xbox 360 physics game, Quick as Thieves, platform puzzler Colour Coded and Shrunk!

The nomination process kicked off with the creation of a shortlist. Developers and publishers entered their own nominations for each category, and these were then voted on by members of BAFTA, along with "a carefully selected list of industry experts via a secure website."

According to BAFTA, “the titles garnering the most votes went through to specialist juries who received the games approximately six weeks prior to making their nominations. Each juror signs confidentiality papers and casts their votes on paper. The results in each category are not known until the envelope is opened on the night.”
