Virgin Media To Offer 200Mbps "In A Few Years"

Asam Ahmad, the head of Virgin Media's Consumer media relations, has disclosed at the Ideal Home Show 2010 in Earl's Court, London that the cable company won't be launching its 200Mbps for at least two years.

We already know that the cable company will launch a 100Mbps service by the end of the year and we wonder whether Virgin Media will keep a three-tier structure (20, 50 and 100Mbps) or whether it will add a fourth one.

Digital Spy's Andrew Laughlin, who attended the event, said that a real time test showed speeds of 185mbps, around twice the speed of the the traditional Ethernet port (which never fully maxes out at 100Mbps anyway) and significantly faster than any commercially available WiFi systems.

Ahmad also confirmed what we already knew before; that the service will be affected by a number of variables including the time of the day, the type of connections being used and we suspect the operating system you're using as well as the sites you're visiting,.

He went on to download two seemingly huge software packages at the speed of 50Mbps each (that's roughly 6MBps) and had enough bandwidth left to stream a BBC HD programme from iPlayer. To be honest, this task only requires around 3.5Mbps according to BBC's own diagnostics page.

Virgin Media's spokesperson for the day also claimed that the 200Mbps trial in Ashford, Kent, was the world's fastest known trial which uses the more widely accepted DOCSIS 3 format rather than some other proprietary ones.

We already know that the cable company will launch a 100Mbps service by the end of the year and we wonder whether Virgin Media will keep a three-tier structure (20, 50 and 100Mbps) or whether it will add a fourth one.

Our Comments

To be honest, we believe that Virgin Media already has the capacity to run 200Mbps but then why launch the service now when the competition hasn't even managed to consistently deliver a tenth of these speeds. We even suspect that "depending on market conditions they might decide to postpone the launch of the 100Mbps by a few months.
