The Times set to charge for online content

Murdoch rags, the Times and the Sunday Times are to begin charging for access to online content from June.

The titles currently share a web site - Times online - but this will be split into two come May.

Users can sign up for a free trial during that month but thereafter they will have to play to access the sites.

The fee will be £1 a day or £2 per week.

Rupert Murdoch has been threatening to extend the pay-per-view model from the Wall Street Journal to the rest of his stable, which in the UK includes both Times papers and the Sun.

He's hoping other publishers will follow suit.
