Open source Songbird dumps Linux

Developer of the open source Songbird media player, Pioneers of The Inevitable announced that it is abandoning its Linux product to concentrate on its Windows and Mac versions.

Project spokesperson Georges Auberger blogged of collective heartache over the decision.

“Some of you may wonder how a company with deep roots in open source could drop Linux and we want you to know it isn’t without heartache," he burbled. "We have a small engineering team here at Songbird, and, more than ever, must stay very focused on a narrow set of priorities.”

One per cent of the Songbird userbase has been running on a Linux platform.

"We are maintaining our Linux build infrastructure and will ensure that it continues to compile and run the unit-test suite," Auberger said.

"We have in house developers that use Linux every day and they will keep developing Songbird on Linux," he said.

In their spare time, it seems.
