Facebook is to overhaul how its users configure their privacy settings, after facing a media and user revolt over how it handles personal data.
CEO Mark Zuckerberg, in a Washington Post editorial today, said that the company will address user concerns with a new set of privacy options "as soon as possible".
"We have heard the feedback. There needs to be a simpler way to control your information. In the coming weeks, we will add privacy controls that are much simpler to use. We will also give you an easy way to turn off all third-party services," he wrote.
Popular opinion began to turn against social notworking site a month ago, when Facebook unveiled more ways for third-party sites to interact with users' data.
That, coupled with a string of information leakage bugs and less-than convincing noises from executives, showed a company that treated its users like commodities.
In response to the backlash, Zuckerberg has now spelled out five principles that the company will operate by, including a promise not to give personal information to advertisers.
