Sex Sites to Get .xxx Domain

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has given initial approval for a .xxx top-level domain for adult websites.

ICM, the company behind the campaign for the domain, explained that the introduction of a .xxx domain would make it easier to filter and avoid innapropriate content.

Stuart Lawley, chairman of ICM said: "It's been a long time coming, and I'm excited about the fact that .xxx will soon become a reality."

Lawley said that the decision was "great news for those that wish to consume, or avoid, adult content".

Many members of the pornographic industry believe that the inclusion of .xxx suffix in their domain names will make their websites a target for web censorship, damaging their online business.

Recent statics report that around $3,000 is spent on internet pornography every second, with the word 'sex' accounting for 25 per cent of all search queries entered on internet search engines.

With an estimated 370 million pornographic websites registered on the internet, the .xxx domain, if widely adopted, could in the near future become as big as .com.
