Microsoft Launches WebMatrix Development Suite

Microsoft has unveiled the beta version of the new Windows-based WebMatrix web development suite, available to download for free, Ars Technia reports.

The web development suite, designed to offer a set of comprehensive web development tools for Microsoft's Windows platform, will incorporate the IIS Developer Express web server, SQL Server Compact Edition web database and the ASP.NET “Razor” technologies previously introduced by the company, Microsoft developer Scott Guthrie said in a blog post.

WebMatrix, which is available as a 15 MB download, will be able to run along side Visual Studio 2010 and Visual Web Developer 2010 Express.

Guthrie explains: “It minimises the number of concepts someone needs to learn in order to get simple things done, and includes and integrates all of the pieces necessary to quickly build Web sites.”

Microsoft says that the platform will allow developers to automatically download, install and configure Web apps on their websites.
