Microsoft Files Patent For Six-Axis TV Remote

Microsoft has filed a patent application with the US Patent and Trademark Office for a new kind of TV remote control that uses six-axis technology, reports tech blog Being Manan.

Six-axis technology will allow the device to detect its orientation and detect movement in six directions.

The remote control, which will be fitted with six-axis internal sensors, will have controls on more than one side, but only the controls on the side that's facing upwards will be illuminated and active - all others remain inactive until the device is rotated.

The discovery of the patent has got tech pundits speculating exactly how the company plans to use the technology, with many believing that Microsoft will incorporate the remote into a TV-specific version of its Kinect motion-sensing gaming peripheral.
