The BBC has launched a News application for Apple's iPhone and iPad in the UK.
The application was launched after the corporation's ruling body, the BBC Trust, decided that the application would not affect market competition.
According to the BBC, the BBC Trust has also approved the launch of BBC Sports and iPlayer applications for Apple's platform, after a thorough review of the market.
Applications for other platforms such as Android are also said to be in the pipeline.
Diane Cole, who led the application review committee on behalf of the BBC Trust, said: “In this case we have concluded that while the apps market is developing quickly and we will monitor the launch of BBC apps, a PVT [public value test] is not required.”
She added that if the BBC applications have an adverse affect on competition in the market, then the Trust had reserved the right to conduct another review of the applications.
Cole said that the applications were given the BBC Trust's approval because they did not involve creation of new content, but delivered current, regular content onto mobile platforms.
