The BBC led IP TV platform Project Canvas has received the support of the electronics industry.
Around 40 manufacturers have shown interest in Project Canvas, and have said that they are willing to support it in any way they can.
This is a huge step forward for the controversial project, which is currently being contested by both Sky and Virgin Media, who claim that the project is anti-competitive.
Richard Halton, Director of Project Canvas, said in a statement: “The response from industry has been phenomenal, and we’re really excited by the strong desire to work with Project Canvas to bring internet-enabled set-top-boxes and TVs into people’s homes next year.”
The Project Canvas is preparing the technical specifications for the platform and is due to announce hardware partner sometime this year. The software for the platform is also set to be provided to partners in 2011.
The initial partners in Project Canvas are BBC, ITV, BT, Channel 4, TalkTalk, Arqiva and Five.
