RIM Launches New Service In UAE

One week after the UAE government resolved its data security issues with RIM, the BlackBerry maker has released a variety of new services for its customers in the Middle East.

During an industry event in Dubai, RIM co-CEO Jim Balsillie said that the new services will be related to e-government and online banking payment.

The UAE government had earlier threatened to ban key BlackBerry services in the country, citing national security concerns. However, the two parties reached a permanent agreement and RIM has launched new services for its half a million users in the Middle East.

Besides the UAE, Saudi Arabia had also threatened to ban its BlackBerry Messenger, e-mail and web-browser, which were seen as a national security threat as they could not be monitored. RIM managed to reach to a settlement with Saudi Arabia few weeks ago.

The company continues to remain in talks with India, which has cited similar security concerns.

Balsillie said during the event: “We are excited to build on our success in the region and to deepen our commitment to delivering industry-leading products and services for consumers, businesses and government organisations”.
