Google has dismissed reports claiming that it is building a new social networking site to rival Facebook.
Reuters reports that during the recent Monaco Media Forum, Google head of mobile product development Hugo Barra said: “We’re not working on a social networking platform that’s going to be another social networking platform."
"We do think that social is an ingredient for success for any app going forward, search and advertising being probably the best two examples that I would mention. So that's how we're thinking about the problem."
Digg founder Kevin Rose had started a rumour that Google might be working on developing a Facebook rival by the name of “Google Me”.
Barra joked about the rumour saying that “Google Me” sounds awful.
In September, Google CEO Eric Schmidt had said that the company is considering adding social networking layers onto its site, instead of building a new social network, but failed to kill the rumours entirely.
