Facebook Credit Gift Cards Go On Sale In UK

Facebook has launched its virtual currency system Facebook Credits in the UK, with customers able to buy giftcards for the scheme in high street shops.

Facebook credits can be used to buy digital goods and gifts on online games like Farmville. At present over 200 apps and games currently accept Facebook credits.

The gift cards will be available through high street retailers Game and Tesco.

At the moment the credits can only be spent on Facebook itself and not on third-party websites, although Deborah Liu, manager of product marketing for Facebook Credits and games at Facebook, told the Telegraph: “Someday it’s something that we would consider,” she said, “but there’s a lot that we want to do on Facebook.com for now.”

Liu also added that the new system would offer parents peace-of-mind in what children were playing online and allowed others to spend their credits as they wished.

Commenting on the new scheme Euan Ballantyne, head of cards at Tesco Bank, said: “We now offer a range of gift cards and social gaming is becoming increasingly popular, so we are pleased to offer what might be an ideal Christmas present."
