Semiconductor company Qualcomm has released more details about its next generation of Snapdragon processor, the MSM8960, which it presents as the world's first multimode 3G/4G integrated chipset.
The first chop of the new Snapdragon family is expected to deliver up to five times the performance of the current single core one and using only 25 per cent of the power, thanks to a 28nm manufacturing process.
More interestingly, Qualcomm will add the new Adreno 3xx GPU which is expected to deliver up to four times the performance of the Adreno 2xx family with OpenGL-ES "Haiti" & OpenCL v1.1 compatibility.
Apparently, The new GPU, which will be released from next year, will rival the performance of the Xbox 360 and the PS3. Both game console used desktop-based graphics technology that will be nearly seven years old by the time the first Adreno 3xx smartphones come out.
Other features mentioned by Steve Mollenkopf, at Qualcomm's analyst day include built-in Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth and FM radio; the processor will compete with a raft of Cortex A9-based SoCs from TI, Nvidia and Samsung amongst others.
