Facebook Christmas Tree App Warning Is A Fake
Security software vendor Sophos has said that the malware spreading Christmas tree application on social networking platform Facebook is a fake.
Fake warnings about a Christmas tree app have been circulating on the platform, advising users not to download the app as it contains a virus that would crash the computer.
There is a possibility that someone could create a virus with the same name now, but the company said that no such malware has been discovered as yet.
The fake warning about the app says: “WARNING!!!!!!.....DO NOT USE THE Christmas tree app. on Facebook. Please be advised it will crash your computer. Geek squad says it's one of the WORST trojan-viruses there is and it is spreading quickly.”
Brett Myroff, the CEO of Sophos South Africa told My Broadband: “Users should rather not share virus warnings with their online friends until they have checked them with a credible source, such as an established computer security company. Malware can be killed off fairly easily, but misinformation like this can live on for months.”
