Sony Ericsson has announced that users of its Xperia X10 smartphone will receive no further version updates of Android.
The company informed via its Twitter feed that “there will be no further updates to the Android platform for the X10 Mini Pro however there will be system updates.”
The only reason Sony Ericsson have given for the move is that Froyo wouldn’t add any further necessary features to the device, beyond those already on 2.1.
“We believe the features included in the Android 2.1 phone are on par with, and in many cases better than, a vanilla installation of 2.2,” the company said on Twitter
To compound the late arrival of Eclair to the Phone in November, users will be now stuck with 2.1 without receiving versions 2.2 Froyo or 2.3 Gingerbread of Android.
The upcoming system update will include multi-touch (pinch/zoom) and support for third party apps.
Sony Ericsson have just unveiled the Xperia Arc at the Consumer Electronic Show, one of its new generation smartphones, which features Android 2.3 Gingerbread built-in. It would appear that the company is looking to focus on its new line of handsets, whilst scaling down support for older models.
