Facebook has announced the acquisition of Seattle based start-up Rel8tion in a bid to boost mobile advertisements.
The social networking giant, which currently has over 200 million mobile users, plans to use Rel8tion's hyper-local ad platform to bring location specific ads to its mobile users. Facebook believes that its mobile users are more responsive towards advertisements then desktop users.
Rel8tion is a nine-month old start-up founded by former Google engineer Peter Wilson and former Microsoft consultant Scott Hannan.
First reported by All Things Digital, the deal will see Wilson become engineering director at Facebook's Seattle office.
PC Mag reports that Rel8tion's hyper-local ad platform, a technology popularised by Groupon, could allow Facebook to introduce ad services to its location-based Facebook Deals feature.
Facebook said in a statement: “We're excited to confirm that we recently completed a talent acquisition of Rel8tion, a stealth-mode startup in Seattle. The engineering team will join our growing Seattle office, and we're looking forward to having them on board.”
