Online hacktivist group Anonymous has apparently chosen as its next target Westboro Baptist Church, which is known in particular for it's extremist position in opposition to homosexuality.
According to ARS Technia, it all started when someone from Anonymous posted a message on posting website AnonNews, warning the Church to stop its intolerant stance or else.
“We will target your public Websites, and the propaganda and detestable doctrine that you promote will be eradicated; the damage incurred will be irreversible, and neither your institution nor your congregation will ever be able to fully recover,” the note read.
Meanwhile, the church decided to add fuel to the fire by releasing an open letter in which the church asks Anonymous to 'Bring It'.
Later that day followed an 'official' online press release from Anonymous in which they addressed the church saying, "so we've been hearing a lot about some letter that we supposedly sent you this morning. Problem is, we're a bit groggy and don't remember sending it."
The manner in which the situation is being handled clearly suggests that Anonymous has no established hierarchy. Anyone could use the Anonymous name to send out messages that deviate from its original mission which is to uphold people's online rights.
