xxx porn domain finally gets the nod

Internet governor Icann has finally approved the creation of the .xxx Internet domain dedicated to pornography.

The decision follows years of wranglings over the virtual adult playhouse. Even the decision itself took a year to resolve after Icann spent twelve months consulting over the move after rubber stamping the idea in 2010.

"The .XXX sTLD issue has been debated within Icann for years. Since shortly after the 2004 introduction of the request for proposals for sTLDs, the ICANN Board has been faced with several contentious debates and decisions on ICM Registry’s application," Icann said in a recent statement. "The Icann community has engaged in extensive debate as well, with this single issue generating higher volumes of community comment than nearly any other issue ever faced within Icann."

The outfit will now pen an agreement with the ICM Registry to kick off the domain. ICM has been trying to launch .xxx since 2000. It came close to approval in 2005, but its proposal was put on ice after far-right religious groups spammed the US Department of Commerce with protests.

Some pornographers are also against lumping all their produce in one place, having already built up successful businesses on the wild web.

ICM has said it already has some 110,000 reservations for .xxx domain sites.
