GoDaddy Sells Off XXX Domain Names

Internet hosting outfit GoDaddy says it will start selling off domain names ending in .XXX to adults only sites because of pressure from its users.

"We've said from the beginning, when it comes to dotXXX, we are going to listen to our customers," GoDaddy CEO and founder Bob Parsons told thinq_

"A large number of our customers have spoken ... and there is a demand for the controversial new domain name extension - for both brand protection purposes and for new names. So what are we going to do? GoDaddy is going to give our customers what they want!"

The XXX extension has long been touted as a way to keep porn in its own area of the Web and should go some way to stop people stumbling across adult-oriented sites by accident.

The company has been clearance by the governing body for domain names the ICM registry and will start auctioning off the URLs as soon as they are released. Existing trademark holders will get first dibs on their own names in September but short URLs like porn.xxx could well fetch millions when they go on sale in October.
