Panasonic Target Enterprise Segment With iPad 2 Rival

Panasonic will launch a 10.1-inch Android-based tablet as part of its award winning Toughbook range which is popular with enterprise, government and business customers looking for a robust and secure computing solution.

The Japanese behemoth has released convertible and normal tablets as well as tough laptops in the past, but they were all running on Windows rather than any alternative OSes; the arrival of Android via a recognised player marks a watershed moment.

Rance Poehler, president of Panasonic Solutions Company, said "The vast majority of tablet devices - regardless of the OS - are engineered for consumers and don't offer appropriate levels of security and durability or the functionality needed for business use. Like all Toughbook products, our Toughbook tablet will be designed and constructed with the mission-critical mobile user in mind."

The tablet will be launched towards the end of the year and will come with a 10.1-inch XGA screen resolution, which means that it will have a 4:3 screen ratio, a rarity in the Android world, one which will match the iPad and the TouchPad.

The screen will not be glossy but will be engineered so that it can be viewed in direct daylight. It will have multitouch capability, a stylus like the HTC Flyer for notetaking, embedded hardware security features, onboard GPS plus optional 3G and 4G connectivity.
